Firearms Ban Won’t Create a Safer Canada

January 23, 2020

When it comes to working towards a safer Canada, the Trudeau Liberals have made it clear that they don’t share the same priorities as Canadians. When they should be protecting the rights of victims, we’ve seen the Liberal Government focus on the rights of criminals. Now, instead of going after criminals, the Liberals are planning to go after law-abiding citizens with a firearms ban.

Rather than taking measurable steps to go after criminals, end gang crime, protect Canadians from repeat offenders, or better equip and fund our existing law enforcement agencies, the Liberals are directing all their attention at law-abiding Canadians. The Liberals have failed to understand that for many Canadians, firearms play a fundamental role in maintaining their livelihoods. Many farmers, hunters and sport shooters depend upon firearms in their day-to-day lives and these law-abiding Canadians are already highly vetted.

This firearms ban will do nothing to deter criminals that are using illegally obtained guns. More importantly, criminals won’t follow this arbitrary ban in the first place. So law-abiding Canadians will have their lives dramatically altered while nothing is done to make our communities safer from criminals and gun violence.

If the Liberals are serious about creating a safer Canada and respecting the rights of law-abiding Canadians, then they should immediately:

  • End automatic bail for gang members
  • Create new and tougher sentences for gang crime
  • Increase prison time for those knowingly possessing a smuggled gun
  • Form a firearms smuggling task force
  • Set a lifetime firearms ban for violent and gang criminals
  • Equip our law enforcement agencies with the tools they require

But rather than implement any of these policies put forward by our Conservative team, the Liberals are focusing on punishing law-abiding Canadians.

When it comes to the safety of Canadians, there is no room for mixed-up priorities. Canadians deserve and expect real measures to secure a safer Canada. The property of law-abiding Canadians should not be the issue. Canadians expect the government to take action to address those who break the law and not those who uphold it. Until February 15, 2020, you can add your name to the growing list of Canadians that are rejecting the Liberals’ firearm ban and calling upon the federal government to protect and respect the property of law-abiding Canadians and instead focus on initiatives that will lead to a safer Canada. If you agree and want to add your name to the list of Canadians standing up for our law-abiding neighbours, and if you want to see real changes that contribute to a safer Canada, then please sign the online petition.
