Getting the Answers Canadians Deserve

October 29, 2020

Canadians are rightly concerned about the health and safety of their family, along with the economic impacts caused by the pandemic. They are also concerned about reports of corruption within the Prime Minister’s Office in relation to the WE charity. Many questions remain unanswered about this relationship, and why friends of the Prime Minister were awarded a multi-million-dollar government contract. Conservatives are working on getting to the bottom of it.

The Liberals pretend they have nothing to hide. But when they released documents relating to the contract, multiple pages were blacked out. Then, they shutdown Parliament and stalled committees that were attempting to get answers for Canadians.

Conservatives introduced a motion in the House of Commons that would create a special anti-corruption committee. This committee would allow Members of Parliament to study the government’s questionable spending and dig deeper into the WE charity scandal. This would free up the other committees to do their other important work on behalf of Canadians.

Since there is a minority government, support of this motion from the two other major opposition parties was all that was needed for it to be adopted. However, the Liberals said that they considered it to be a confidence vote, and would trigger an election if it passed. Not even a pandemic can contain Liberal entitlement and arrogance.

This thuggish bullying worked on the NDP, and the motion was defeated. There must be some pretty big secrets the Liberals want to hide if they were willing to force Canadians into an election in the middle of a pandemic.

Conservatives will not relent. A few days later, we introduced a motion to look deeper into how the government responded to the pandemic. Canadians have concerns that the Liberals have not been transparent when it comes to procuring PPE, testing, and vaccine development. Canada has fallen behind other countries in many of these areas, and it is only making our recovery more difficult.

This was not a partisan motion. We proactively amended it to put reasonable and responsible limits on the type of information that is being ordered. We are simply trying to get answers for Canadians.

While the Liberals continue to use political tricks to avoid accountability, Conservatives know that Canadians want to stay safe, get back to work, and see our economy regain its strength. We will keep working to ensure focus is placed on hard working Canadians and families instead of Liberal insiders and friends. Whether or not Justin Trudeau likes it, opposition plays a crucial role in our Parliament, and Conservatives will not standby as they continue to hide from Canadians.

HAVE YOUR SAY: Do you think it is reasonable to ask the government to be transparent and release documents related to the pandemic? Let me know here.
