The Punishment Should Fit the Crime

May 30, 2019

Conservatives understand that a society is judged by how it stands-up for and protects its most vulnerable members. Protecting Canadians and creating a safe country means putting the rights of victims before the rights of criminals. This means that the punishment should fit the crime. Conservatives believe that these criminals such as human traffickers and child abusers who harm, abuse, or exploit children in our community should be behind bars for a long time. After all, the pain and trauma caused by these criminals lasts a long time.

Even though we don’t always think of human trafficking in Canada, human trafficking is on the rise – and the Liberal Government isn’t doing anything about it. One-quarter of all victims of human trafficking are under the age of 18, half of all victims are Indigenous Canadians, and 95% of all victims are women. Canadians deserve a plan to stop human trafficking and protect members of our community from harm. Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer recently announced our plan to protect people from human trafficking. Conservatives will bring back the previous Conservative Government’s National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking, update the Criminal Code to create a stronger definition of human trafficking and end the process of automatic bail for individuals charged with human trafficking, all while working to guarantee that convicted offenders receive consecutive sentences for their crimes.

Like human trafficking, the number of cases of child abuse is unacceptable. No child should be put in harms way, and we must do everything we can to protect children from violence and abuse. While protecting our children from violence is common-sense, it’s all too often that high-risk offenders who have committed horrific assaults to children are let off easy. Often high-risk offenders have been released early from already too short prison sentences and are given little more than a slap on the wrist. In fact, right now the minimum sentence for child abuse is one year. But Conservatives believe that those who are convicted of hurting our defenseless and vulnerable children should serve at minimum 5 years in prison. The safety of children must come first.

There has been a disturbing trend in recent years where criminals are prioritized over the rights of victims and safety of our community. The Liberal Government has not acted on the rising cases of human trafficking and child abuse. But there is no place in our society for these atrocious crimes. From giving police the tools they require to stop these heinous acts to ensuring the punishment for these horrible acts matches the crime, Conservatives know that together we can make our communities safer for you and your family.
