A Real Plan for the Environment

Recent reports indicate that for the carbon tax to be effective at helping the environment, it would have to be five times higher than it is today. Canadians cannot afford this irresponsible, cruel, and costly tax plan. Fortunately, Canada’s Conservatives see things differently. Canada’s Conservatives have a record of environmental achievement – from the creation of the national parks system to the development of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. Drawing upon that proven history of protecting the environment while keeping life affordable for families, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer is discussing the Conservative vision to protect the environment.

The Liberal Government is treating Canadians like the world’s worst emitters, yet ignoring countries that are contributing the most to global emissions. Conservatives recognize that Canada produces only a fraction of the world’s emissions. Canada is home to a rich and dynamic energy sector that is both clean and safe. Instead of restricting Canada’s flow of resources, Conservatives know that the world actually needs more Canadian products. It’s time to get clean Canadian resources – like natural gas and oil – onto the world stage, so that they can be used to help lower global emissions in countries that are currently increasing their dependency on unclean technologies and resources. Canada should be a global leader that uses its technologies, resources, and products to reduce foreign greenhouse gas emissions. After all, while Canadians are happy to do their part, real environmental action must occur on the world stage.

The Conservative vision for protecting the environment starts with recognizing what happens when businesses, companies, and Canadians are able to succeed. Rather than overtax Canadian families or threaten jobs, a real environmental vision requires nurturing and encouraging innovation, growth, and improvements. At home, this means offering incentives for energy efficiency improvements through a home retrofit program. By allowing Canadians to be eligible for a refundable tax credit for renovations, Canadians will be able to get that much needed home upgrade while positively contributing to the environment. In the community, Conservatives understand that governments must work with communities, provinces, and municipalities to harmonize recycling programs and increase community consultations in order to promote a cleaner and greener environment. At work, this means offering a Green Patent Credit to corporations that develop and patent new clean technology. And it means ensuring that large emitters are investing in emission-reduction technology.

Canadians deserve better than the Liberal Government’s carbon tax and focus on shutting down industries that could be used to benefit the entire world. Only Conservatives have the record, knowledge, compassion, and vision to protect both the environment and the livelihoods of Canadians. And while we can do more at home, the world needs more Canadian made resources and products because they are the best way to protect the environment and help the world.
