Richards Report – December 29 2017 – Upcoming Budget Priorities
Upcoming Budget Priorities
Support for Alberta’s energy sector? A balanced budget? Lower taxes for all Canadians? Better support for our small businesses?
Every federal budget gives Canadians an opportunity to tell the government what they want to see prioritized for the upcoming year. While your thoughts on how your money should be spent may be drastically different from the government’s ideas, it is still important to voice your opinion. After all, the large outcry from Canadians forced this Liberal government to go back to the drawing board with their proposed small business tax changes.
Despite the government revising their plans on the proposed small business tax changes, there is a chance that these changes may survive in some form in the budget. Canadians need to be aware of this and ensure that their opinions on how small businesses are taxed, and many other issues, are voiced and that the government hears them.
The government has also given a sneak peek at what Canadians can expect to see as priorities in the budget. In the online pre-budget consultation (available at www.budget.gc.ca/pbc18), the government asks Canadians to fill out four surveys on four topics: progress for the middle class, economy of tomorrow, lifelong learning and gender equality. I encourage every constituent to take a few moments to fill out these surveys.
I will also be holding pre-budget consultations in January 2018 across our communities:
