Treating Our Troops Unfairly

The brave men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces have a long and proud history of putting their lives on the line in service of their country. As they travel abroad to perform dangerous work, they leave their families behind at home and miss important milestones like birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations.

Canadians recognize the sacrifices that our troops make, day in and day out, and have great admiration for their service. And I think I speak for most Canadians when I say that our troops should be compensated appropriately for the work that they do and the risks that they take.

But because of a Liberal government decision, this is no longer the case for Canadian troops who are fighting against ISIS in Kuwait as they have lost a tax benefit which provides them with $1500 to $1800 per month.

Fifteen soldiers at Camp Arifjian in Kuwait originally lost this benefit last September because the military downgraded their risk level. I don’t see how anyone can think that being in a fight against ISIS isn’t “risky” enough, but that decision was still made.

It was brought to the Liberals’ attention that these soldiers deserve this tax benefit as they face the same level of risk as other Canadian Forces in Kuwait. However, instead of reversing their decision and restoring the benefit, the Liberal government decided to revoke the benefit for all our troops who are battling ISIS in Kuwait!

The Liberals have known for months that Canadian troops who are deployed in the fight against ISIS have not been adequately compensated for the hardship and risk associated with their deployment. And instead of fixing the problem, they are hitting more troops with financial hardship. Our troops and their families have been cheated out of hard earned money that they have expected, counted upon and deserve.

Given that this Liberal government continues to rack up record deficits with their out of control spending, it is absolutely disgraceful that the one place they would choose to pinch pennies is on the backs of the hard working men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces.

The government needs to do the right thing, reverse this abhorrent decision, and support the brave men and women who stand on guard for all of us
