Richards Report – July 28, 2017 – Changing Canada’s Citizenship Guide

Changing Canada’s Citizenship Guide

Thousands of people who want to build a better life for themselves and their families choose to come to Canada and we have one of the most fair and generous immigration systems in the world. The success and prosperity of our country has benefited greatly from the many contributions from immigrants and refugees from all over the world.

For those who have chosen to become Canadian, our citizenship guide is a key source of information about Canada’s history, laws, and culture. Our previous Conservative government understood this and we updated Canada’s citizenship guide to reflect that.

But now as the Liberals are preparing to make updates of their own to the guide, reports are indicating that they are about to make some concerning changes.

For instance, reports are saying that the Liberals are planning on removing references to female genital mutilation (FGM) in their new version of the citizenship guide. FGM is a horrific act of violence against women and girls and ignoring the issue will do nothing to help its victims.

Canada’s Conservatives will always stand up to protect the rights of women and girls. Removing the mention of FGM from our citizenship guide sends the wrong message and we call on the government to inform Canadians of the steps they will take to protect victims from this terrible practice.

Additionally, it is being reported that the Liberals are going to divide the responsibilities of citizenship into two categories – voluntary and mandatory – and ‘respecting human rights’ will be under the voluntary section. It is outrageous that the Liberals think it should be a voluntary act to respect someone’s basic human rights.

It is also discouraging to hear that the Liberal government is planning on including quotes from the Prime Minister in the new version of the citizenship guide. This guide is an official Government of Canada document, not an advertising tool for the Liberal Party.

Newcomers to Canada should be given every opportunity to succeed; opportunities for economic success, the experience of our many freedoms, and the experience of safe communities. Unfortunately, these reported changes to Canada’s citizenship guide do not reflect that.
